Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis

Physical therapists are now more than ever using Iontophoresis as a therapeutic modality. Iontophoresis is a method of electrical stimulation that is used to help administer medications through the skin and into the body. This technique uses negatively charged medicinal solutions that are applied to the body. Then a negative electrical charge is applied to the body. These two negatively charged ions will repel one another causing the medicine to push into the body and into the injured tissues.

Iontophoresis uses electrical stimulations and medications that and are ionically charged in order to deliver medications across the skin and into the injured or inflamed tissues. Steroids like dexamethasone are most commonly used to treat conditions of inflammation. This particular steroid may help reduce the swelling in the tissues and decrease pain that often accompanies an inflammation.

Depending upon the medication that is used during treatment, Iontophoresis can be used in the treatment of other conditions as well.
